"Transformations"
Part 1: "Priorities"
Matthew 6
January 1, 2012

All of us have stuff that fills our day:

Work, Personal tasks, Social Obiligations, Time in the Car, Recreation, Unexpected Things

Transformation.

I want to grow closer to God.

Love.

I want to love people the way that Jesus loves people.

Calling.

I want to serve God by developing and using the gifts He's given me.

Joy.

I want to celebrate each day with joy!

How people respond to the problem of busyness:

1. I'll get around to it when I get a bigger jar.

2. I'll just shrink God's priorities.

Challenge:

1. I am going to devote myselft to what matters most.

2. I am going to trust in Jesus' promise that "all these other things will be added to me."

"Transformations"
Part 2: "A Transformed Life"
Exodus 3
January 8, 2012

Reviewing what counts the most:

T ransformation

Moses' description of the human condition:

"I am what I am."

God's response:

"I AM is with you."

But if that's true, then why haven't I "transformed"?

1. Because "spiritual elbow grease" alone is not enough to transform me.

2. Because information alone is not enough to transform me.

God's answer to me:

1. There really is someone at work to bring about transformation in me, and its not primarily me!

2. My task is to stay connected to God from one moment to the next to the next.

"Transformations"
Part 3: "A Prayer-Filled Life"
Luke 11
January 15, 2012

To experience a life of intimacy with God:

1. I need to realize that more than God wants to give me stuff, He wants to give me Himself.

2. Consider prayer as simply a way of learning how to be with God.

3. I must make time to practice solitude.

     A. Take nothing with me but mayble a little Scripture.

     B. Be aware of how my temperament will affect my solitude.

     C. Be open to the possibility that God will speak to me.

Note: "God's Voice"

...will never tempt me to do wrong.

...never contradicts what He says in Scripture.

...may lead to pain when He convicts me of sin.

...will never lead me to anxiety or discouragement.

4. I'll try to be fully present with God during solitude.

     A. If my mind wanders toward something, it may be exactly what I need to talk to God about.

     B. Be ready to jot down things that distract me.

5. Talk directly to God!

6. Talk to God about my regular life.

This week:

Begin thinking of prayer as talking with God about what He and I are doing together!

"Transformations"
Part 4: "A Holy Life"
Matthew 5
February 5, 2012

The problem of trying to be good:

1. The scribes and Pharisees saw "goodness" as a "sin avoidance" problem.

2.  Jesus saw "goodness" as really a "heart" problem.

3.  What is inside of me will always leak out of me.

The solution to our "goodness problem":
1.  Willpower doesn't change the heart.

2.  I must become the kind of person who wants to do what is good.

Beginning this week:
1.  The Adventures in Obedience.

What did I seek to do today just because Jesus says to do it?

2.  The Practice of Confession.

     A. Examine your heart.

     B. Confess to Him.

     C. Ask His forgiveness.

"Transformations"
Part 5: "A Spirit-Fi
lled Life"
Luke 3, 1 Samuel 3
February 12, 2012

Some things we know about the Holy Spirit:

1. The Holy Spirit has always existed with the Father and the Son.

2. The Holy Spirit was fundamental to the life and ministry of Jesus.

3. If I know Jesus, I know the Holy Spirit.

4. It is possible for God to communicate with me and for me to not know it.

5. The Holy Spirit can speak to and through anyone.

6. There is a mystery to walking with the Spirit..

...which helps remind me that I'm not in control.

How do I know if the Holy Spirit is speaking to me?

1. The Spirit always leads us into the fruit of the Spirit.

2. The Spirit who inspired the Scriptures never contradicts the Scriptures.

3. The Spirit never leads us into sin.

4. The Spirit leads us in a way that is consistent with the gifts of the Spirit.

Our prayer:
Speak, Lord, our servant is listening.

"Transformations"
Part 6: "A Day with Jesus
"
Genesis 2:15, 3
February 19, 2012

1. God wanted to be with the man and the woman He made.

2. Even with sin, God's desire to be with us has never changed.

3. The God who made me wants to be with me.

How to spend a day with Jesus:

Tomorrow, do what you normally do, but do them with Jesus.

1. Before you go to sleep, talk with Jesus.

2. Spend the first minutes of your morning alone with Jesus.

3. Get ready for the day with Jesus.

4. Gratefully enjoy a meal with Jesus.

My goal:

If I can spend one day with Jesus, I can spend every day with Jesus-- one day at a time.
